Pioneering The Use Of Second-Life Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Elli Takes A Significant Step Towards A Greener Future

In collaboration with Cellect Energy, ELLI – A brand of the Volkswagen Group, leads the automotive industry by becoming the first-ever automotive company listed on EPEX Spot to start trading on the German electricity market. In Baunatal, Germany, Elli has deployed the first second-life battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 560kWh. This innovative system enables intraday trading on the European electricity market's largest power exchange, EPEX Spot.

The BESS in Baunatal utilizes batteries sourced from Volkswagen's 'E-up!' range of electric vehicles. This successful partnership showcases the commitment of both companies to sustainable energy solutions and paves the way for future advancements in the automotive and energy sectors.

This project is a pioneering testbed for a digital energy trading platform. Elli plans further deployments of more second-life BESS on its path to leveraging the relatively new technology to integrate EVs via vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) technologies.

Cellect Energy played an instrumental role in the project by providing a comprehensive software solution that enabled the utilization of existing EV battery modules in a stationary setup. Through automating the control and communication between trading software and the physical battery asset, Cellect's solution facilitated efficient and seamless operation.

Cellect´s proprietary platform allowed for real-time remote monitoring, tracking, and managing these assets through a unified interface. With its Cellect API and Cellect Control offerings, the company created a solution with a minimal integration requirement.

Reflecting on the partnership, Ingo Müller, Vice President Energy at Elli, said: "Cellect has proven to be a reliable and knowledgeable partner from first engagement until launch and beyond on a daily basis supporting our life-operations. It simplifies communication and control tasks and accelerates the overall trading workflow."

The collaboration between Cellect Energy and Elli illustrates the transformative potential of renewable energy solutions. It not only reflects the partners' commitment to greener energy practices but also exemplifies how technological innovation can be harnessed to forge a more environmentally conscious future. "The integration of our battery assets with trading solutions is now straightforward, thanks to Cellect. We are looking forward to growing our business." Müller adds.

Cellect Energy's CEO, Leon Gosh, speaks highly of the partnership and its future prospects: "Our collaboration with Volkswagen and Elli marks a significant milestone in our growth as it not only showcases the scalability and versatility of our platform but also highlights our commitment to driving sustainable energy practices."
